Food Prices in Bulgaria in 2022. How Are Prices Rising?

To plan your stay in a new country, you need to know what food prices are in Bulgaria. More than six months have passed since our articles about prices I'm curious about food prices in Bulgaria. How have they changed? How much have they increased since we wrote the last article? We'll find out now. We'll also calculate Bulgaria's 2022 food basket and compare it with those of previous years. 
Since the last food price article was published, official inflation in Bulgaria has reached 12.3%.

Bread and bakery products

Many stores have a fresh baked goods section. You can even buy fresh bread and have it sliced right there, choosing the thickness you want. Prices: white bread from €0.81, dark bread from €0.71.

Fruits and Vegetables

Banana prices a year ago and now. Potatoes from €0.66. Onions from €0.61. Tomatoes from €2.29. Cucumbers from €1.02. Apples from €1.78. Bananas from €1.53. Prices per 1 kg.

Tea and coffee

Although tea is unpopular in Bulgaria, Kaufland stores have recently expanded their tea selection. They now offer budget-friendly teas under the Kaufland K-Classic brand. The instant coffee selection is shown in the photo.

Pasta and grocery. Grocery prices in Bulgaria

Economy-class pasta from €0.59. Instant noodles weren't mentioned in the previous price review. But prices have risen, and the selection has noticeably decreased. A shortage has emerged. Interestingly, despite the overall price increase, pizza prices have remained stable. There's iodized salt and sea salt.

Vegetable oil, eggs and dairy products

Olive oil, 750 milliliter glass bottle. 10 eggs in a package. Economy milk, 3.5% fat, 1 liter package. Butter in a 250 gram package. "Kiselo mlyako" is a traditional Bulgarian product, something between kefir and sour cream. A variety of condensed milk is also available. Cheeses: Emmentaler, Gouda, Mozzarella.

Meat and fish products

So, fresh chicken in vacuum packaging. Chilled pork in a 600-gram package. Bulk beef. A selection of sausages is in the photo. This is the selection of canned fish.

Chocolate and drinks

A selection of chocolates from local and imported producers, soft drinks and bottled drinking water.

Household goods

Toothpastes, shampoos, laundry detergents…

Prices for gasoline and diesel fuel

So, as promised, we present to you the Bulgarian food basket for 2022. When selecting products, we focused on affordable items of acceptable quality. Compared to the 2021 basket, we see that the basket has become significantly more expensive.

As a result, the increase in food prices during this period (between the two articles on food prices in Bulgaria) amounted to more than 37%.
